Rechelbacher opened his first salon, Horst & Friends in Minneapolis in 1965. He went on to found Aveda in 1978, taking the name from the Ayeurvedic principles he had learned during his time in India. By 1997, Rechelbacher was able to sell the expanding business on to Estée Lauder for around $300M (US). Once a local favourite for small town residents in rural Minnesota, Aveda has become an international success story, with outlets in over 130 countries around the globe.
