Dior branched out into the cosmetics industry shortly after establishing a name in haute couture. The first Christian Dior scent ,‘Miss Dior’, was launched in the late 1940s. Then, in 1954, Dior started selling its first matte-finish lipstick. It was available in eight shades of orange designed to coordinate with that season’s haute couture collection – the lipstick was wildly popular as it gave members of the general population a chance to experience luxury of Dior products.
Christian Dior continued to make strides in the makeup world with innovative lip colours, introducing a light, glossy finish in the 60s. At the same time, the House started to release coordinated nail enamel as a prelude to their eventual release of a full cosmetic range, including foundation, blush, powder, eye shadow and mascara. The range was an instant success and served as a mould for today’s Dior product lines.
In the 1970s, the company launched a host of skin care products alongside the more trend-oriented colour and couture collections. Christian Dior continued to push the envelope by developing original anti-ageing products and ‘invented’ the liposome to enhance the age-defying effect of it’s moisturisers. Dior continues to push the envelope for innovation in skin care today, offering specialised products to address a wide range of specific skin.
The current Dior cosmetics line up includes an armoury of skin care products. Dior have three general goups of products, those for combination to oily skin, those for normal to combination skin and those for dry to sensitive skin. In general, each line includes skin care products such as: cleansers, including the refreshing Rinse-Off Cleansing Foam, and the more unique Cleansing Gelee which acts as a three-in-one cleanser for the face, lips and eyes; toners, like the Energising Toner, which includes a special silicone derivative to enhance skin’s softness; and a wide range of moisturisers, from serums to crèmes to soothe and protect skin from the ravages of dehydration.
Makeup by Christian Dior includes a full range of vibrant colours for lips, eyes, the face and nails for dramatic effect, as well as more subtle shades sure to suit all tastes and complexions. Each season’s Dior couture line is complimented with a new suite of colours for maximum impact.
Other beauty products from Dior include the Capture line of anti-ageing products, treatments for cellulite, the Hydraction range of moisturisers, crèmes to nourish and protect sensitive areas, body buffers and scrubs, as well as a comprehensive collection of sun care and self-tanning products. What’s more, Christian Dior offer an amazing range of popular fragrance-based products for men and women.
Most Christian Dior cosmetics and fragrance products are available in department stores such as Debenhams and Fenwick, and larger Boots stores, as well as some specialist online retailers. Smaller branches of Boots and some specialty boutiques carry a limited range of Dior makeup and fragrance products. The Dior website has a good store locator which lets you search for recommended retailers in your area.
