In the 1950s, a South African Chemist named Graham Wulff developed a beauty cream for his wife – something to make her look and feel beautiful, radiant and young. The formula he created in collaboration with his wife had a fluid texture, worked to hold in moisture and keep the facial surface supple with a hint of pink and a matte finish – as well as the legendary scent women around the world recognise instantly as ‘Olay’ today.

Wulff worked with a local advertising executive to found Adams National Industries, the company that first produced and marketed Oil of Olay. The product itself was an instant hit – within a decade, the operation expanded out of South Africa and into England, the Nethrelands, Germany and North America. When the product first launched in the UK, it was known as Oil of Ulay – because it was thought that the name should ‘sound pleasant’ to customers. The brand was acquired by Procter & Gamble in 1985 and its popularity has continued to increase, because of the nature of the global marketplace, P&G opted to consolidate the Olay brand under one name, which is why today the products all carry the simple ‘Olay’ label no matter where you are on earth.
Olay products for women in the UK fall into four major categories: moisturisation, healthy skin, anti-ageing and regeneration. Moisturising products by Olay include traditional products such as Classic Care Active Beauty Fluid, packed with moisture-rich nutrients that echo the caress of the original Olay beauty fluid; the Olay Double Action Day Cream, a non-greasy moisturizer that nourishes and protects; and the Classic Care Active Hydrogel, free from colours and perfumes, it works to hydrate skin at the cellular level. Also within the classic collection are a range of cleansers and body washes.
The Olay collection for ‘Beautifully Healthy Skin’ includes the Complete Care range of products specifically formulated for daily use. Complete Care by Olay includes specialised products, such as Complete Care Multi-Radiance Cream, a moisturizer with mandarin extract and natural light-reflecting particles to enhance the radiance of your complexion while providing SPF15 protection from UV damage. The range also includes the handy Olay Daily Facials – textured cloths that produce a generous foam to remove dirt and impurities as well as providing exfoliation for a deep-down clean feeling. Olay Daily Facials are available in specially-formulated variants with tailored ingredients for different skin types and needs.
In terms of anti-ageing products, Olay offer a truly complete solution for today’s women. Products such as Total Effects 7x Day Cream work hard to produce younger looking skin by reducing the appearance of wrinkles, smoothing the texture of your skin, boosting the healthy glow of your complexion, decreasing pore size, evening kin tone and providing essential hydration instantly. If you’ve only noticed the tiniest signs of ageing, Olay offer First Effects, an anti-ageing moisturiser gentle enough for younger skin, yet powerful enough to beat back the tide of time.
